Video Games have been a modern day phenomena which has influenced our society today. The influence of video games has bled over into older forms and mediums such as movies and television. When a show called Maniac Mansion was developed based on the classic game. This created a whole new realm of excitement as the possibility to visit a TV adaptation would have been great. The story a mixture of science fiction and horror was a great parody of both genres and provided lots of laughs. For this reason the fact that a TV adaptation was in the works for this particular game was something that most fans would look forward to. With this in mind the TV show was something that was greatly anticipated. However once the show actually began there was a small sense of disappointment as the plot line did not follow the game exactly. Rather than deal with the current time frame and era of the game itself, the creators decided to fast forward the series and move the time frame to the future. In doing this while the references to the game can still be found it was disappointing that it had been changed around.

Who’s up for an all day Maniac Mansion marathon!! There are only 66 episodes, so it’s completely doable. However, I understand if you want to make a weekend of it. This show is awesome. For those that don’t know much about it here’s a quick explanation: A meteor is in this family’s basement and their dad is a mad scientist. Weird things happen because of the meteor’s supernatural powers. The kid in the house turns into a full-grown man, but still has the kid’s brain. The uncle turns into a fly, except his head is still a man’s head. Then you throw in typical living and you’ve got a quality comedy. It’s humorous and fun, a great family weekend when you can’t afford a “real vacation.” The series was only three seasons and it is Canadian, just to warn you. However, it is great family viewing. It is hard to find family friendly programming today with all that is allowed to air, even at 8pm. Some people did not like the show because it is loosely based on a game. I was never a big gamer, so the fact it did not match the game, made no difference to me. Just check it out. Even if you do not make a weekend out of it!

The TV show “Maniac Mansion” was created from the basis of a video game originally released by George Lucas in 1987. The show features the Edisons, a family living in an American town called Cedar Springs. The family also just happens to reside in a massive mansion.

Actor Joe Faherty is father Fred, a peculiar scientist. Fred’s wife is named Casey and she is portrayed by actress Deborah Theaker. Together they have three children, Tina played by actress Kathleen Robertson, Ike portrayed by actor Avi Phillips and George Buza is toddler Turner. The family has opened their home to Casey’s brother Harry along with his wife Idella.

Fred’s father left him the mansion when he died and the residence came with an extraterrestrial meteor that brings strange occurrences to the manors inhabitants. During one episode Turner becomes a grown man and in another Harry has the body of a fly. Fred attempts to fix his family using his experiments.

The creators occasionally mix in imitations of other television shows, movies and commercials. Also, the show breaks the fourth wall, which is when one of the characters addresses viewers directly. Another fun twist is when the show goes behind the scenes and viewers see that the family is portraying their own lives. The series finale depicted Turner in the future as a television creator of the show “Maniac Mansion.”The information doesn’t stop now.

Maniac Mansion fans know their show’s not the only sitcom based on an original video game. Here are a few of the most well-known games that made their way from the small screen to the…small screen.
Mortal Kombat: Conquest – Based on the hugely popular video game of the last 19802, Mortal Komat was a live action show featuring all manner of graphic fighting. The violence in the program was so realistic some parents complained to the FCC and likely looked into security systems for home.
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? – Originally a clue based video game, Carmen Sandiego was a huge hit among young teens in the 1990s. The game show featured three contestants an episode vying to answer geography questions for scholarship cash with the winner heading to an ultimate MAP round.
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show – What could be more classic than a show based on one of the world’s most popular video games? Super Show was a cross between a game show and a live action comedy hour that allowed kids and adults alike to get in on the action.
With so many new games on the market each year, it’s only a matter of time before a new show’s developed…tune in to see!

Maniac Mansion was a remarkable show, which offered plenty of memorable moments and great laughs. Picking one exemplary episode from the complete three season run is a toughie… It’s downright impossible! However, we’re not looking for the best, we’re looking for my most favorite, and that’s far easier!

My most favorite episode has to be the second season’s premier, “Luck Be a Lady This Season”. It kicked the season off with a retrospective bang, while delivering hilarious send ups of Home Alone, Married…With Children, and Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

What surprised the heck out of me, however, was the pitch PERFECT parody of cult television show Twin Peaks! This brief spot showed Maniac Mansion totally understood David Lynch’s iconic weirdness/style: quirky dialogue with odd deliveries, flashes to tangentially related images (At one point, Tina asks, “Who?” and suddenly we flash to an obviously stuffed owl in “flight” making “who-who-o-o” noises!), and an almost paranoiac attention to details (the sound of a faucet’s dripping grows so loud, it drowns out the dialogue.). I have never geeked out so fast over anything in my life. In that brief parody, I became not just a fan for life, but a fan FOREVER!

Does the character make the actor or vice-versa? Some characters, like James Bond for instance, are played by a number of actors. Each lend their own unique signature and even raise the unresolved debate as to which actor is the real James Bond. But I think a favorite character has to be one that is synonymous with the actor – one that makes people say, “You have some pretty big shoes to fill if you’re going to play Captain Kirk.”

I think favorite characters both on the big screen and television become the most memorable because of the actors who played them. Peter Falk for instance, no matter what other screen appearances he’s made, will always be Columbo – the fumbling, disheveled L.A. Homicide Detective who almost always cracked the case by merely irritating the perpetrator. If the character was played by any other thespian, it just wouldn’t have been the same.

And who could forget Robin Williams as Mork, the alien who shacked up with Mindy? Regardless of Williams’ on screen success, any scene that shows him rambling on in a variation of voices is hard not to compare with the alien he portrayed that greeted people with “Nanu-nanu.”

Not every character relies on the actor who plays them to become a viewers favorite but if you think about it, they’re probably cartoons.

He currently hosts the Bite TV show Uncle Joe’s Cartoon Playhouse and is a judge on The Second City’s Next Comedy Legend.Deborah Theaker, who played wife Casey Edison, has appeared in numerous television shows, including Desperate Housewives, Entourage, and Bones. She performed in four films with writer/director/actor Christopher Guest.Kathleen Robertson, who played teenage daughter Tina Edison, later starred as Clare Arnold in the drama Beverly Hills, 90210.

Can’t get enough of the zany antics of the Edisons? Well, you’re in luckwe have some recommendations for you. Do not adjust your TV settings–you’ve just entered the realm of the sci-fi sitcom.3rd Rock from the Sun (6 seasons, 1996-2001): This long-running comedy was also focused around a “family”although in reality, the family was a team of aliens on a research expedition to Earth. Stellar performances from John Lithgow, Kristen Johnson, French Stewart, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Jane Curtin make this a show with infinite appeal. Luckily, all six seasons are available on DVD.ALF (4 seasons, 1986-1990): Today ALF is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the bizarre sensibilities of the 1980s, but he started as a refugee from the planet Melmac, which was destroyed due to nuclear war. Crash-landing in the garage of the Tanners (not the Full House family), ALF is forced to adjust to Earth life while also dealing with such common problems as Mrs. Tanner’s acerbic mother and the birth of a new Tanner child. All four seasons have been released on DVD by Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The Jetsons (3 seasons, 1962-1963, 1985-1987): The original swinging ’60s sci-fi carton proved so popular over the years that it was revived in the 1980s for two more seasons. An obvious counterpart to The Flintstones, The Jetsons centers on the titular family and their science-fictional companions, including Rosie (a robotic maid), Astro (an English-speaking dog), and Orbitty (an alien with spring legs). A live-action film is planned for a 2012 release, and the first season and the first half of the second is available on DVD.Red Dwarf (8 seasons 3-part miniseries, 1988-1999, 2009): Due to the different scheduling practices of British television, American viewers might be surprised that only 55 episodes were produced over the series’ initial 11-year run. However, packed into those 55 episodes is plenty of dry British humor and off-kilter sci-fi. The show centers on Dave Lister, the last known living human, and Arnold Rimmer, a holographic representation of his dead bunkmate. Other main characters include a lifeform evolved from a housecat, a sentient computer, and a beautiful girl from another dimension.
